About Us

The Advanced Materials Laboratory (AML), led by Dr. Elsiddig Elmukashfi, is a forefront research group dedicated to pushing the boundaries of materials science through a synergy of advanced simulations and cutting-edge experimental techniques. Our work revolves around developing high-fidelity models and designing precise characterisation experiments to uncover the intricate process-structure-property (PSP) relationships in materials.

At AML, we focus on understanding deformation and failure mechanisms and the role of microstructural features—including their statistical distributions—under extreme conditions such as high temperatures, corrosive environments, and mechanical stress. By integrating correlative microscopy, full-field measurements, and AI-driven modelling, we aim to bridge the gap between experimental observation and predictive modelling.

Our overarching mission is to pioneer a microstructure-informed, closed-loop framework for studying material behaviour. This approach not only enhances our fundamental understanding of material degradation but also facilitates the development of resilient, optimised structures and the design of next-generation advanced materials capable of withstanding the challenges of modern engineering applications.
